Missions We Support

South Hills Interfaith Movement (SHIM)

The South Hills Interfaith Ministry (SHIM) shares a lot with Bethany Lutheran Church and houses a food pantry, clothing bank, and resource opportunities for those in our area living under the weight of suburban poverty. Bethany teams with other congregations of various denominations and faiths to provide resource support for SHIM. For example, each Sunday Bethany hosts a Good Samaritan Sunday in which members and friends of the congregation offer food gifts to replenish SHIM’s shelves. Each year, members and friends of Bethany host a Diaper supply drive for SHIM. Bethany is in close contact with SHIM and aims to be a primary support, partner, and minister with them in our community.

Souper Bowl of Caring

Each Super Bowl Sunday, Bethany Lutheran Church collects food and monetary donations after worship services. These donations are then given to the South Hills Interfaith Ministry (SHIM) where they are distributed to those in need in our community.

Bethany Mission Trips

The people of Bethany Lutheran Church act on Jesus Christ’s call to “Go forth and make disciples of all nations.” This mission is carried out in Christian love by our commitment to give resources, time, and work to benefit the needs of others, all while explicitly communicating that we do this in the name of God who loved us first. Our call to mission extends to Bethel Park, the Pittsburgh area, and well beyond into national and international needs.

BLC has sponsored four mission trips, the last one was in 2013 to Haiti. Our first three trips have been domestic, including work at:

  • Oaks, OK at the Oaks Indian Mission: rebuilt and remodeled community buildings
  • Brooklyn, NY: refurbished a Lutheran church in a Jamaican community
  • Rural Upstate NY: refurbished two church buildings
  • La Croix, Haiti: medical care, eye glass distribution, building construction & teaching
